St Michael's Green Journey
Stage 2 - Staff Involvement
Of course, 7 or 8 people cannot act alone. One of the first decisions made by the Green Team was to include all the staff, recognising that as an Investor in People this continued St Michael’s theme of staff development and involvement. Box 1 shows how we went about achieving this first step. To ensure that everyone got an opportunity to become involved this was printed on re-used paper and distributed to every member of the 100 strong team. We are intent on ensuring that all staff are made aware of our stance, therefore as part of the induction process, designed to inform new staff members about health and safety practices, employees are taught about the hotels commitment to sustainability and encouraged to be involved in any way that they see fit.
Proprietors Nigel and Julie Carpenter are also involved in The Green Journey. Approximately 3 years ago the hotel underwent major refurbishments. This process was meticulously planned with sustainability and local sourcing at the forefront of the project. Much of the timbers were forestry Council Stewardship approved, reclaimed or even genuine driftwood. Water efficiency was increased with the installation of low capacity toilets and at all times local tradesmen and techniques were incorporated where appropriate.
