Falmouth in Bloom Winners 2015
The St Michaels crew are thrilled to announce that we've won the first prize trophy for Falmouth in Bloom in the 'Large Hotel' category.
The Mayor of Falmouth presented the cup to St Michaels’ Gardener Richard Jamieson and Proprietor Nigel Carpenter at Princess Pavilions today. The competition hasn’t taken place for several years, but has now been re-introduced to recognise the efforts people put in to improve the amenity of Falmouth for everybody.
Judge Simon Penna said: “Exactly the type of garden I would want to see in Falmouth, as it takes full advantage of the wide variety of plants that our mild climate allows us to grow. This type of planting attracts tourists to Falmouth, as much of what is on display can’t be seen elsewhere in the country.
The garden is not just interesting, but is well laid out and colourful. There are techniques and elements of best horticulture practice on display throughout. The newly installed pebbled garden I really loved too – it shows real imagination and a flare for design, and I was most impressed to hear that the “boss” had a hand in the design too…that’s teamwork!
I was lucky enough to be shown around by Richard the gardener. He’s a valuable asset to the garden and he truly gave me the impression that he loves and takes immense pride in his work. Richard grows flowers to cut and use in displays inside the hotel in the old herb garden, which is another real benefit of having a resident gardener like him. Herbs are also grown and production will continue to increase for the kitchen team to use in their dishes.”
The categories this year included large hotel garden (over 20 bedrooms), family hotel garden (under 20 rooms), guesthouse garden and beer garden. Marks were given for overall impact, colour, design and creativity.
Thanks again Richard for all your hard work, passion and commitment to make the St Michaels garden look its very best.
