Cornwall has plenty of Christmas goings on as always - from famous festive lights and ice-skating to spotting Santa's reindeers and experiencing an overload of Christmas markets...
CHRISTMAS MARKETS IN CORNWALL
20–22 November - TREREIFE CHRISTMAS FAIR, PENZANCE
Forget the hustle and bustle of the high street and do your Christmas shopping in the magical atmosphere of a historic estate. Heated marquees will be brimming with artisan produce and Cornish arts and crafts to fill stockings and pile up under the tree. As well as a lantern parade to kick off the weekend, there will be mulled wine, festive fare and live music.
25-29 November - MADE IN CORNWALL CHRISTMAS FAIR, TRURO
What with the City of Lights procession, a visit from Santa and his reindeers, and an atmospheric ice rink, it’s not as if Truro doesn’t have enough going on to launch the festive season. Add to that a market dedicated to the wares of Cornwall’s finest artists and food and drink producers, and you’ve got the perfect Christmas shopping experience.
4-6 December - FOWEY CHRISTMAS MARKET, FOWEY
Fowey’s town quay comes alive with the spirit of Christmas, hosting a fantastic market of local products from photography and food to affordable stocking fillers. As well as a hog roast, a Samba band and the arrival of Father Christmas by sea, the entire weekend is stacked with carol singing, feasts and street entertainment alongside the stalls.
5-6 December - PADSTOW CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL, PADSTOW
Nestled on the edge of Padstow’s pretty harbour, where fishing boats twinkle under fairy lights, this is a Christmas market with a foodie twist. Not only can you get your hands on Cornwall’s finest foodstuffs from hand-made chocolates to chutneys, there will also be also chef demos from the likes of Rick Stein, Nathan Outlaw and Michael Caines. And it’s not all about food – there’s an array of presents to choose from including wooden toys, art, decorations and clothing.
10-12 December - OUTLAW CHRISTMAS MARKET, FALMOUTH
For handmade gifts with a designer edge, head to Outlaw Christmas Market which will be right in the centre of Falmouth’s busy shopping area two weeks before Christmas. Step inside the beautifully decorated marquee for the very best craft, gift and food and drink producers from Cornwall and beyond, as well as chance to get hands-on with lots of Christmassy things to make and do. There will also be live music, street food vendors and Falmouth’s signature independent vibe.
12-13 December - JUBILEE WHARF CHRISTMAS FAIR, PENRYN
Buy your Christmas presents in an award-winning, community-focused development on the banks of Penryn River. In addition to the usual offering of a café, nursery and community hall, local potters, bakers and talented artisans will have their seasonal crafts on sale. CORNWALL'S CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS
FROM 28 NOVEMBER - EDEN PROJECT, ST AUSTELL
Eden can always be counted on to pull out all the stops and this Christmas is no exception. Their popular ice skating rink is back with its baby and toddler play sessions, and races and games for juniors. A very special visitor with his handy helpers and antlered companions will be taking up residence at Eden in the run-up to Christmas as he prepares for the big night.
Explore the Enchanted Rainforest and marvel at the transformation of the humid tropics into a magical winter wonderland, with special performances from renowned Cornish theatre company, Wildworks.
WEEKENDS IN DECEMBER - BODMIN AND WENFORD RAILWAY
Father Christmas has swapped his sleigh for a steam train and throughout December can found hurtling through the Cornish countryside aboard the Bodmin and Wenford Railway. The festive journey is topped off with mince pies and an obligatory seasonal drink whilst the little ones are treated to a pressie from the man of the moment.
THROUGHOUT DECEMBER - NATIONAL TRUST PROPERTIES
For good old tradition and a dose of classic fun there’s no-one that does it quite like the National Trust. Most of the NT properties across Cornwall have festive events but stars of the season have got to be Cotehele, Lanhydrock and Trerice where Father Christmas takes centre stage. He’s joined by Mrs Christmas at Cotehele, in green Tudor style at Trerice and in Victorian splendour at Lanhydrock.
FROM 12 DECEMBER - MOUSEHOLE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
The Christmas lights in Mousehole draw many thousands of visitors each year for annual family traditions. Truly a stunning sight, with floating displays of lights in the harbour and around streets filled with the aroma of mulled wine and festive food. You’ll see a fantastic display of sea serpents, fishing boats and whales colourfully lighting up one of Cornwall’s most welcoming harbours.
The village is ablaze with colour and to really appreciate the displays, walk around the narrow streets and follow the strings of lanterns as they disappear around the corner into yet another street barely wide enough to walk through.
12 AND 13 DECEMBER - NEWQUAY ZOO
He may be more used to reindeers but Father Christmas is putting himself among the likes of zebras, lions and monkeys when he drops into Newquay Zoo's Christmas Weekend. He’ll be treating the animals to special Christmas enrichment presents, and when tucked up in his Grotto he'll memorise present requests and noting who’s been naughty or nice. There’ll also be an elf workshop and fun for all the family.
20 – 22 DECEMBER - TREBAH GARDEN, FALMOUTH
For a traditional Christmas atmosphere that the big man himself would be proud of, head to Trebah Garden just outside Falmouth. Masters at capturing the festive spirit, Trebah has become renowned for its popular Santa Days that take place just before the grand event.
Follow the festive trail through the winter gardens to Santa’s magical woodland grotto and cosy up next to the wood-burning stove as excited children share their present wish lists – it’s a truly magical experience. There is also drop-in Christmas craft workshops, face painting and entertainment from Tarquin the balloon wizard.
