Falmouth’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Local Area

Come visit these beautiful sites in Falmouth.

FALMOUTH HARBOUR

With its backdrop of gentle hills rolling down to the water’s edge, Falmouth harbour is home to a flotilla of boats bobbing at their moorings. Every summer day is a sailing day in Falmouth as yachts and traditional working boats can be seen racing or practising in the Carrick Roads, the deep stretch of water between Falmouth and the Roseland Peninsula.

THE RIVER FAL

Discover the River Fal with secret coves and ancient trees all along the waterway. Take a boat trip from Prince of Wales pier in Falmouth to soak up the sun and scenery. The National Trust’s Trelissick Garden dips its toe into the Fal at Feock, with 40 acres to explore from woodland and wild flower banks to formal lawns and dramatic exotic borders.

ST MAWES

Take a short ferry trip across to the other side of the estuary and stroll around St Mawes for a day. Home to an Elizabethan castle nestled on its coastline and with Lamorran Gardens just up the hill, you’ll be spoilt with beautiful views and quaint streets. We love wiling away the afternoon perched on the harbour-side with an ice cream or two.

FALMOUTH'S GARDENS

Falmouth itself has several gardens – far from the usual style of municipal city gardens our sub-tropical oases are dotted within the town. The biggest - Kimberley Park - is home to fine ornamental trees, and has lovely lawns to spread a blanket on to enjoy some al fresco nibbles. We love a quick walk to Fox Rosehill Gardens (a favourite lunchtime spot for the St Michaels crew!) Tucked away off Melvill Road, it's just a 5 minute lazy stroll from the hotel. This peaceful haven is packed with plants from Australia, New Zealand and South America, which have grown to luxuriant dimensions in our mild Cornish climate. Discover lemon, banana and eucalyptus trees amongst bendy bamboos, agaves and a wide variety of palms.

GYLLYNGVASE BEACH

We can’t possibly exclude our beautiful beaches from our list of favourites. Situated on our doorstep is Gylly beach. Proudly displaying a Blue Flag for its cleanliness and safety, it has a great café, watersports center and brimming rock pools with lots of little sea critters. Walk in the shallows and play for the day, or kick back and soak up the views out to sea and magnificent Pendennis Castle on the nearby headland.
