Gentle south facing slopes, drenched in summer sun, cocooned in the warm bubble of the gulf stream. The perfect place for a vineyard. Winemaking in Cornwall has taken off in a big way in the last few years and what better way to spend a romantic day together than touring the estates and sipping bubbly on sun drenched terraces.
Camel Valley, near Bodmin
Cornwall's best known vineyard and one famous for their bubbles. If you are feeling like a more energetic day out then head for Wadebridge, hire a bike and follow the Camel Trail towards Bodmin along the riverbank and through shady woods until you reach the foot of the vineyard. After a good cycle you'll have earned a couple more glasses...
Knightor Winery, near St Austell
Tucked above St Austell Bay and just around the corner from the world famous Eden Project, this winery is based around a pretty courtyard of granite farmhouses and barns. Enjoy a selection of wines with a charcuterie platter or cheese plate before a wander around the biomes of Eden.
Polgoon, near Penzance
Probably England's most westerly vineyard, just nine miles from Land's End. These guys make sparkling elderflower wine, cider and juices for River Cottage so you know they must be good. Find out why Hugh likes them so much with a vineyard tour and tasting session before stocking up on tasty treats from the farm shop and deli and heading to the coast for a picnic, with a drop more wine of course.
