An Introduction to Tai Chi

Try something new with our introduction to Tai Chi member's session, on Sunday 18th 5:00pm

Tai Chi or T’ai Chi Ch’uan (taijiquan) is an internal Chinese Martial Art System which involves 3 essential aspects:

  • Movement mediation, finding a state of mental calm and clarity
  • Health and well being through the physical mode of movement for the body
  • Martial art, to apply the techniques and movements for self-defense, working through yielding and sticking.

Our taster Tai Chi lesson taught by David Greeves will involve a range of exercises to develop movement awareness, an understanding of the technical and physical attributes of the system and to begin a journey of learning a Yang Style 103 Traditional Long Form developed by Zheng Manqing (Cheng Man-ch’ing).

The session will involve a moderate physical warm up and stretching, movement awareness exercises, involving rooting/grounding and yielding, some basic application of movements and the first steps into the Yang Style Long Form.

David Greeves has studied Martial Arts for many years and uses Martial training in his professional work as martial arts choreographer, wire-work trainer and movement lecturer.

Having practiced Tai Chi Chuan for over 25 years, he aims to develop an understanding of the body in relation to the movement practice, using a range of exercises and the form to achieve connection to the bodymind and energetic (chi) system.

If you want to discover more beyond our taster session, you can also sign up for a full 4 week workshop! These will not be run as a drop in class as the sessions involve ongoing development.

The course is open to beginners and all levels of experience, with emphasis on mindful practice.
